Lots of fun responses to the below.  (See I'm getting it.)  Some involved not so much past technologies as barnyard/rural ones that can't be understood any longer.  Anyone with children knows that barnyards and farms and animals are a fantasy realm where a thousand books take place; take the same children to a chicken factory or agribusiness... oh dear.  But we used to know what it meant to be mad as a wet hen or look like a chicken with its head cut off or to get all your ducks in a row.  We still use the terms.  I wonder what "fix his wagon" means or meant. 

Trains too must be a source.  "Off the track" for sure.
